Bylaws

Please note: The Utah PTA Board of Directors has recently approved changes to the Local and Council Bylaws. These changes are reflected online and include the removal of required "fill in the blank" spaces for general membership meeting months. All local and council bylaws that have been through the online renewal process will be automatically updated. Units who have not had bylaws approved online will still follow the updated bylaws, but copies will not reflect the change automatically.

Information about Bylaws

Bylaws are the legally binding set of rules that guide an organization and are of such importance that they can be changed only after ample (at least fourteen days) notice has been given and the members have voted to approve the change (amendment).

Bylaws are comparable to a constitution and are organized into articles and sections.

If you need a copy of your current bylaws, they can be found by logging in to your PTA account and clicking on your unit. You may print as many copies of your bylaws as needed. Incoming Presidents should copy their current bylaws and distribute them to their incoming executive committee to avoid problems and know what to expect.

Study your bylaws so they will be as helpful as possible. It is a good idea to read through a small section of the bylaws at each board meeting. The numbers written in your bylaws must be adhered to exactly—they are not a minimum.  Take note of dates and special instructions to help you plan your PTA calendar.

The approval and expiration dates of your bylaws are written in the seal on the front page. Bylaws must be submitted to Utah PTA for renewal every three years. Bylaws and amendments are valid only after they are returned to you (via email) with the new seal and expiration date stamped on them.
