SB0102S07 | Public Education Reporting Amendments

Description
General Description:

This bill requires certain programs be reviewed.

Highlighted Provisions:

This bill establishes sunset dates and allocation of remaining funds for a list of programs. Many of these programs (ie Beverly Taylor Sorensen Arts) have a significant impact on students. Some study needs to be done to better understand how to sunset the programs without causing a significant loss to educational offerings for students.

Sub 4 of this bill still contains wording that could cost public education $270 million in professional staff funding.

While Utah PTA supports efforts to increase more flexible funding allocations, elimination of existing program funding needs to be approached very carefully. Some of the programs that will sunset with this bill provide significant educational offerings that are needed for students. Sunsetting the programs without careful consideration could mean the loss of these offerings.  One program is for professional staff funding which provides significant dollars to teacher salaries, the loss of that funding will be catastrophic to teacher compensation.
