Commissioners

Commissioners and Programs

Utah PTA utilizes 7 commissioners to not only advocate for all children in Utah, but also provide program ideas and resources for specific areas of concern for local commissioners.  Those commissions are: Community Engagement, Education, Family Life, Health, Individual Development, Safety, and Student Leadership.

For more information about how to use Commissioners in your PTA, click on a link below.

For more information about the programs and resources available through our commissioners see the Resource Tab at the top of the website.

Community Engagement
Engaging all members of the community, business, religious, and government entities to improve the quality of life and education of all children.
Education
Public Education is the means by which values, citizenship, literacy, and numeracy are transmitted from one generation to another. Education is also the number one predictor of a child’s future prosperity
Family Life
Healthy family relationships result in the success of children in all aspects of their lives. Utah PTA believes that the first and most important teacher throughout a child's life is the parent.
Health
Healthy people are happy people who feel good—inside and out. The health commission hopes to provide and utilize resources that are targeted to protect and improve the health of children and youth.
Individual Development
The social, emotional and ethical development of young people is just as important as their academic
development. It is, in fact, the precursor to academic achievement. This includes Character Development and Arts Education.
Safety
To advocate for children and youth in order to provide a safe environment at home, at school, and in
the community.
Student Leadership
Students are genuinely interested in improving their communities, their education, and the world in which
they live. PTSA offers them the means to realize these goals through legislative advocacy and programs.

Utah PTA encourages positive involvement in the political process by parents and families, which includes more than just voting. The National PTA supports the concept of shared responsibility in the development of school policies and in curriculum decisions. PTA urges all school boards to cooperate with parents, teachers, students, principals, administrators, business, civic and community leaders, and the general public in this process. As students learn and grow in their knowledge and understanding, they can take on more responsibility. Just like the process of learning to drive, where we don't immediately give the keys to the car without going through the driver's education process, we shouldn't be giving the "keys to the car" of voting without going through a similar education process. We encourage school board nominees, as well as all persons running for public office, to find ways to engage with our students to help them as they learn the issues around voting and the political process.

Impact on Children:

This bill would allow 16 & 17 year-olds to vote in local school board elections, but only if the local school board votes to allow it.

If they register to vote through this process, they will be automatically registered to vote for all elections at age 18, unless they opt out.

Impact on Children:

We finally got a rule that set nicotine limits on vaping products, and this bill would essentially be the "nose of the camel" in the tent. It would only apply to two products right now, but it would be leading to who knows how many down the road. It would take the power to control nicotine levels away from the state, and give it to the FDA.
