2008 Legislative Priorities

1.  Parental involvement
2.  Class Size Reduction
3.  closing the Achievement Gap
4. Vehicle Safety Laws
5.  Local Control

Resolutions
A resolution is a call for action. It is a statement that may give direction for that action. A resolution may also memorialize, commemorate, or express appreciation. Local PTAs, councils, region and Utah PTA commissions and committees may submit resolutions for consideration to the Utah PTA resolutions committee.
Bill Sheets

The Utah PTA bill sheets are a listing of bills that Utah PTA follows. The sheets also include the position we have taken on each bill. During the session, the bill sheets are updated weekly. When the session is over in March, a final report is posted.

On the 2008 final priority bill sheet, two columns are linked to the vote in the House and Senate so that you can see how any particular legislator voted on the bill. When a position is highlighted in green, the legislature voted on the bill in the manner that PTA had advocated. If the position is highlighted in red, the legislature voted in opposition to PTA’s position. All bills are linked to their enrolled text and the resolution that supports our position on the bills are also linked so that you can refer to those items, as well .

Legislative Action Committee (LAC)

The Legislative Action Committee (LAC) consists of the Utah PTA Executive Committee, the Utah PTA Commissioners, and appointees chosen by the Legsislative Vice President and approved by the Board of Directors. The LAC is a recommending body to the executive committee and the Utah PTA Board of Directors.

The LAC meets monthly except during the legislative session, when members work individually with commissions to evaluate and recommend Utah PTA positions on pending legislation.

Utah PTA Legislative Conference

Each October Utah PTA holds a legislative conference for all Utah PTA members with workshops on current issues affecting children, including a focus on current Utah PTA legislative efforts. Information on registration is sent to local presidents in theSeptember/October Perspectives issue.
